Turn an old framed picture into a memo board masterpiece with a little bit of help from Resene.

Framed memo board

Weekend DIY with Mark Rayner - Project 16

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: Clean cloth, Mineral turps for washing brush, Old picture frame with hardboard backing*, Paintbrushes, Paint stirrer, Resene No 4 Roller and paint tray, Resene Quick Dry, Resene Sureseal pigmented sealer, Resene Testpots in the following colours: Resene Astronaut, Resene Digital Blue (x2) and Resene Lemoncello (x2), Resene Write-on Wall Paint, Sandpaper (*Note: if your picture frame has a MDF backing board, use Resene Quick Dry instead of Resene Sureseal)

Top tip: Mark painted the background wall with Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Buff.

How to make a memo board

Step 1Step one
Remove the hardboard backing from the picture frame and apply one coat of Resene Sureseal, washing brush out afterwards with mineral turps. Allow Resene Sureseal to dry.
Step 2Step two
Lightly sand the picture frame to provide a ‘key’ and brush off any sanding dust with a clean cloth.
Step 3Step three
Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to the picture frame, allowing two hours to dry.
Step 4Step four
Apply two coats of Resene Lemoncello to the backing board, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 5Step five
Apply one coat of Resene Astronaut to the picture frame and allow two hours to dry.
Step 6Step six
Mix both parts of Resene Write-on Wall Paint according to instructions and stir with a paint stirrer. Leave to stand for five minutes.
Step 7Step seven
Apply two coats of Resene Write-on Wall Paint to the backing board using a No. 4 roller. Apply evenly in one direction, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 8Step eight
Paint the picture frame with two coats of Resene Digital Blue, allowing two hours for each coat to dry. Fit the backing board back into the picture frame and wait 48 hours before using.

Other ideas: Paint the frame with Resene Scotty Silver over a basecoat of Resene Heather and paint the backing board with Resene Silver Chalice before applying the Resene Write-on Wall Paint.
