How to paint kitchen cabinets

Weekend DIY with Mark Rayner - Project 47

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need

To get the look: Mark used Resene Qristal ClearFloor 2K on the floor and surrounding woodwork.

Other ideas: For a soft creamy look paint the kitchen units with Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Rich Cream.

How to paint kitchen cabinets

 
Step 1Step one
Remove plastic drawer and cupboard handles.
Step 2Step two
Mix sugar soap with warm water following product instructions and wash the plastic handles thoroughly. Rinse with clean water and allow to dry.
Step 3Step three
Wash down the unit drawer fronts and cupboard doors with the sugar soap solution until thoroughly clean. Wash off any residue with clean water and allow to dry.
Step 4Step four
Lightly sand the unit drawer fronts and cupboard doors to ‘key’ the melamine surface.
Step 5Step five
Wipe off any sanding residue with a damp cloth and allow surface to dry.
Step 6Step six
Apply one coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer to the unit drawer fronts and cupboard doors and allow two hours to dry.
Step 7Step seven
Apply one coat of Resene Windfall to the unit drawer fronts and cupboard doors and allow two hours to dry.
Step 8Step eight
Apply a second coat of Resene Windfall to the unit drawer fronts and cupboard doors and allow two hours to dry. Replace the plastic drawer and cupboard handles.
