Tactile textures

From habitat plus - decorating and colour trends 2023

Textured finishes, whether achieved through a Resene paint effect or wallpaper soften the edge of a space and make it more comfortable and appealing to be in.

They add interest and a sense of movement to large expanses of wall, and make you want to reach out and touch surfaces. Textures are becoming more casual, a simple and effective way to add interest to neutral wall colours and evoke far flung exotic destinations.

A fresh green textured wall in this lounge

The fresh green of this wall is amplified by the addition of a textured visual effect to bring extra freshness to the whole space. It’s easy to achieve – simply paint the wall in Resene Secrets and randomly apply Resene FX Paint Effects Medium mixed with Resene Paddock.

Table vase in Resene Paddock. Sofa from Danske Møbler, coffee table and wall hanging from Cittá, jug from Flotsam & Jetsam, cushions and throw from Mulberi, books from Sunday Store.

A bedroom with a textured wall and bold floor

Textured effects and a bold colour choice on the floor breathe life into this bedroom.

The rear wall is painted in Resene Thorndon Cream with Resene FX Paint Effects Medium mixed with Resene Half Nomad. Floor and vase in Resene Cinder, chair in Resene Scrub and DIY artwork in Resene Eternity with Resene FX Crackle effect topcoated in Resene Thorndon Cream. Duvet, pillowcases, green cushion and quilt from Cittá, patterned cushion from Penney + Bennett, scarf and sheets from Father Rabbit.

top tip  Always try out your effects combination on a piece of cardboard before doing your whole wall. Experiment with your paint to effects proportions. Resene testpots are ideal for this. Write down the recipe you have used to mix your paint with your effects medium so you can replicate it later.

There are many ways to add texture to your spaces with Resene products such as Resene FX Paint Effects Medium, Resene FX Faux Rust Effect, Resene FX Crackle, Resene Sandtex or Resene FX Metallic paints.

One of the most popular modern textured styles is a casual limewashed concrete look, reminiscent of Mediterranean villas or mudbrick homes. Try a tone-on-tone effect by picking two variations – one dark, one light – of the same hue for a natural earthy finish. For example you could try popular Resene Tea as your main wall colour, then apply a patched topcoat in Resene FX Paint Effect Medium mixed with Resene Half Tea for a hand-washed chalky effect.

Follow through on the casual 'undone' nature of the paint finish with relaxed furnishings like throws and cushions in natural shades and fibres like linen or wool. A central item of upcycled furniture also works well.

Old-school artisan like finishes

Invoke old-school artisan like finishes using products like Resene Resitex Coarse in Resene Sugar Loaf.

Paper texture

If you’re finding it tricky to choose a wallpaper that suits your current room palette, try a Resene Anaglypta wallpaper, which is designed to be painted over. Choose from a range of textures, then apply your favourite Resene colour over the top. It’s an easy way to get the texture you want in just the right colour to suit your decorating plans.
