Two-colour feature wall

Weekend DIY with Mark Rayner - Project 17

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: Damp cloth, Filler, Long straight edge, Low-tack masking tape, Paintbrushes (including a medium artists’ brush), Paint tray and roller (Roller sleeve No.1), Pencil, Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Elvis and Resene Outrageous, Resene Quick Dry, Sandpaper, Tape measure

Top tip: Mark painted the shelves with Resene Enamacryl tinted to Resene Half Alabaster.

Other ideas: Try a soft monotone combination using Resene Castle Rock and Resene Tana.

How to paint a two colour wall

Step 1Step one
Prepare the wall, filling any nail holes with filler. Once dry, lightly sand smooth and remove any sanding dust with a slightly damp cloth. Allow to dry.
Step 2Step two
Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to the wall and allow two hours to dry.
Step 3Step three
Measure the halfway mark on the wall and draw a light vertical pencil line using the straight edge.
Step 4Step four
Apply two coats of Resene Outrageous to one half of the wall, overlapping the pencil line. Allow two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 5Step five
Again, measure the halfway mark on the wall and mask off a vertical line with masking tape, as shown.
Step 6Step six
Using an artists’ brush apply a line of Resene Outrageous along the end of the masking tape, as shown, and allow to dry. This will help to seal the edge, preventing the second colour from seeping underneath.
Step 7Step seven
Apply one coat of Resene Elvis to the other half of the wall, allowing two hours to dry.
Step 8Step eight
Apply a second coat of Resene Elvis to the other half of the wall and, before the second coat has dried, carefully remove the making tape. Allow two hours to dry.
