5 design trends to watch in 2014

It's been an exciting year for design in 2013 – we've seen the resurgence of chevrons, a splattering of neon brights and plenty of lush jewel tones to liven up interior design as well as fashion, advertising and web design.

So what might we expect to see from 2014?

Here are five of our picks for paint colours, designs and trends to look out for in the new year.

Radiant Orchid

After a bright tangerine in 2012 and a rich emerald in 2013, Pantone has recently announced the official colour of the year for 2014 to be 'Radiant Orchid'. According to this authority on paint and colour, orchid is able to expand creativity and originality, inspire confidence and emanate great joy, love and health.

Resene Bilboa Flower is a beautiful orchid colour that captures all of these attributes, and would complement a range of other colours including rich greens such as olive, as well as turquoise, teal, and pale yellow. It can also bring a bright pop of colour to any toned-down space as a feature wall or through accessories and soft furnishings.

Clear furniture

The appearance of clear furniture and fittings comes and goes with the cyclical nature of design, but it has seen a resurgence at the end of 2013. This trend is likely to continue through to 2014 and have a strong presence in design circles throughout the year.

As glass, or the more common plastic material plexiglass, coffee tables, television cabinets, bookcases and lamp tables are all making interior design waves with their modern appeal and simplicity. These pieces are particularly good in small spaces where you don't want to crowd the area, in dark rooms where you want to give the space an airy feel, or when you have other patterned pieces and wish to balance a busy design with a simple statement piece.

Moody rooms

In the wake of a few years of creams, whites and beiges infiltrating interior design, many industry watchers are predicting a dark twist to 2014. While this doesn't mean pure black will be found throughout bedrooms around the world, it's more likely some people will opt for an indulgent mix of almost-blacks, deep velvety reds and purples with just a few lighter touches to throw the dark colours into relief.

Metallic fixtures, accessories and soft furnishings such as this chic and stormy Resene Ambience curtain are also on trend right now and will add some serious glamour and drama to a darkly decorated space.

Floral prints

They've already infiltrated runways around the world and are flowing into our wardrobes in a surge of bright, playful colours with a fresh take on an old trend. It's no wonder then that florals are expected to continue their worldwide popularity in interior design.

The Resene Bloomsbury range is a perfect example of how a floral pattern can be pretty, classy and timeless all at once. Floral designs on the walls should be matched with more simple monochrome furniture, but you can still draw a common theme through an interior by using florals on cushions, table runners and other small furnishings.

Mirrors as art

One last design we expect to see become a major trend in 2014 is the use of mirrors as art, or even, art as mirrors. Some artists are creating works that can hang on the wall as a piece of interesting and beautiful art, yet also double as a mirror. Others simply include portions of their artwork that are reflective. You can also see this trend emerging in nail art as leading brands produce varnishes with highly reflective qualities.

In a home or design space, this can be simply a mirror with an intricate frame, it could be a series of mirrors hung to appear as art, or a mirror in an unusual shape or design. These pieces not only provide an extra spot to check your hair – they will also open up a small area and help light better reach all corners of a room.
