Make an interior look larger than it is

When you've been tasked with the interior design of a small building or room, it can be tricky to make spaces seem larger than they are. Find out how to achieve this effect with these top tips.

Use light colours

Light colours used throughout a room can make it seem larger and more streamlined. Paint walls in a light colour to make the room feel bright and airy, and carry this colour throughout its furnishings.

Resene Rice Cake is the perfect shade to open up a room. It's a neutral yellow-white that will complement most colours, and provides the perfect blank canvas for your decorating ideas.

You could even paint furniture in Resene Rice Cake to give the illusion of one uniform colour throughout the room.

Match curtains with paint

If you're adding curtains to a room, keep them a similar shade or colour as the walks to avoid breaking up the space with contrasting colours or patterns.

Resene Harmony Voile is a great accompaniment to Resene Rice Cake as its herringbone detail will not only let in plenty of natural light required to make a room feel more spacious, but it's a great colour match, too, making the room look more unified.

Utilise light

One of the easiest ways to make a room seem larger is by letting in as much natural light as possible. Keep curtains open during the day and place mirrors in strategic corners of the room to reflect both natural and artificial light.

Recessed spot lighting is both attractive and effective in highlighting open spaces. Another great option is a skylight in the ceiling, which allows more natural light to flow through at a different angle.
