Q. We've scraped our weatherboards back to rimu and are using an oil based undercoat. We painted one part of the house with our topcoats and the paint seems to blister in the heat of the day. What's causing this? A. Where there is a blister what is revealed when a blister is cut open? When investigating a failure, the best practice is to check what the failure type is and if intercoat adhesion, which layers are involved. This can easily be seen by checking the back of a flake and comparing it to what remains where the flake delaminated from. If the failure is cohesive, there is usually evidence of the same paint colour being present on the back of the flake and where the flake peeled from. June 2016

Q. How do you remove Resene Write-On Wall Paint on a wall? Can you paint over it or do have to use special product to remove it? A. Thoroughly sand to a dull finish then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen or Resene Zylone Low Sheen. June 2016

Q. Just a quick question about painting. When I paint a single coat of paint on an object will the paint be exactly even? What I mean is will the wet paint disperse evenly so you could put a spirit level on it after it has dried and it would be exactly level? A. The degree of levelling depends upon the paint type and how it is applied. One coat of a standard paint is equivalent in thickness to about half the thickness of cello tape. Most solventborne topcoat paints do have sufficient open time to achieve good flow and levelling of the applied wet paint film. Waterborne paints set up at a much faster rate than a solventborne equivalent and this can often see a reduced open time for the applied wet paint film to achieve flow and levelling. There is also a range of open times that exist within waterborne topcoat paints. The initial drying of a waterborne paint is the loss of water from the wet paint. Application of waterborne paints under application conditions of elevated temperatures and reduced humidities will reduce the open time as the wet paint film will set up and dry quickly due to a quick loss of water from the wet paint. Resene sell Resene Hot Weather Additive to extend the open time of our waterborne paints when the paint is applied at elevated temperatures and lower humidities. In general the flow and levelling of waterborne points do not achieve the same degree as a solventborne analogue. The application method must also be considered. For the best level of finish waterborne paints should be spray applied as this application method will give the deposition of an even wet film of paint onto the surface. Roller application will always give a slight orange peel effect but the selection of roller sleeve does impact upon the level of orange peel. Brush marking upon drying is a common outcome of brush application of waterborne paints, even with good lay off technique and addition of Resene Hot Weather Additive. The very fast set up of waterborne enamels can make achieving a completely brush free finish very difficult. June 2016

Q. How do I prepare stucco for painting? The house hasn't been painted for approx. 40 years and has areas where the paint has come off completely. It is currently painted white with blue trims (like Resene Santorini). We aren't sure what colours to paint a stucco house and it's from 1935. I have seen the Resene X-200 and Resene X-400 products and I think that's what we need to use. If so does it just get tinted to the colour we need or used as a primer? A. I suggest that as a first step to re painting that you get a flake of paint from an area that has flaked back to the stucco and get it tested for the presence of lead. The presence or absence of lead will dictate prep procedures. June 2016

Q. I have used Resene Sureseal pigmented sealer on concrete blocks and cement board. Do I need to undercoat before I put on two topcoats of Resene Hi-Glo waterborne enamel? A. Resene Hi-Glo can be applied directly to the surface sealed with Resene Sureseal. June 2016
Q. Should kitchen cupboards, shelves and surrounds be painted with enamel or acrylic paint? A. Enamel, solvent or waterborne. June 2016
Q. Are you able to assist with a technical matter regarding washing paint brushes (waterbased paint)? I am looking for the chemical composition of the water once a waterbased paint brush is washed out. Do you have any details on this subject? A. In general the wash water will be a diluted version of the paint. This will consist of a waterborne paint resin, pigments and wetting agents. The main coloured pigment will be titanium dioxide; tinted colours will contain other pigment dispersions to give the required colour. Depending upon the paint there may be other additives for rheology control and in primers anti-corrosive pigments. June 2016
Q. Can you spray paint using normal acrylic paint? If so how many undercoats and also finishing coats? For use on MDF. A. Standard waterborne paints can be spray painted; spray equipment will vary with product and the substrate to be sprayed. General practice is to apply a seal coat and then a single spray coat of topcoat paint. June 2016
Q. Is there a paint system that can be applied over glazed terracotta tiles in a small kitchen and toilet area? A. Using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner ensure the surfaces to be painted are clean and free from grease, paying particular attention to hand contact areas. Apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and allow to cure without water contact for at least 48 hours before overcoating. Then apply two coats of Resene Lustacryl Kitchen & Bathroom. Roll all coats using the recommended roller sleeve. The new paint system will take five days to develop good initial adhesion and continue to cure for an additional three weeks until full cure occurs. In the early stages the paint surface will not have good resistance to cleaners or abrasion as these features develop as the film undergoes curing. Note that painting will not reproduce the original features of the tile surface. June 2016

Q. We are renovating a couple of bedrooms in a '70s home. We have replaced ceilings with new soft board (was called Pinex back then). It's glued and perimeter screwed to the ceiling. While it comes preprimed, it needs bits re doing. It has also been installed so that there is negative detailing of 5mm between sheets. Do I prime/seal the sheets before or after filling the screw holes? A painter we used somewhere else did the undercoat first then filled the holes which I thought was a bit backwards! A. Priming prior to filling then re priming over the filled area after sanding is an accepted practice that dates back many years. This practice assists to reduce filler shrinkage, leaching of any material from the filler into the substrate (this was a common problem when linseed oil putty was used to fill nail holes in timber) and adhesion of the filler to the primed surface. June 2016

Q. I have some varnished cane chairs which I would like to restore by painting them. They have a lot of woven and latticed cane which would be difficult to sand the varnish from properly. The varnish is still in good condition and has not flaked. What do you suggest I do to restore them and what are suitable products to use? Then apply two coats of Resene Lustacryl waterborne enamel. The new paint system will take five days to develop good initial adhesion and continue to cure for an additional three weeks until full cure occurs. In the early stages the paint surface will not have good resistance to cleaners or abrasion as these features develop as the film undergoes curing. This system is suitable for interior only. June 2016

Q. I have 120 square metres of patio tiles. They are old and brown and I think ceramic. Is there a coating I could apply? A. Using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner ensure the surfaces to be painted are clean and free from grease. Apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and allow to cure without water contact for at least 48 hours before overcoating. Then apply two coats of Resene Lustacryl. Note that this is a decorative system painting will not reproduce the original features of the tiled surface and damage may occur if furniture is dragged across the painted surface even after full cure has occurred. June 2016

Q. I would like to get the local panel beater to spray-booth paint my kitchen cupboard doors. I don't want a gloss finish, but naturally the finish needs to be durable and cleanable. I am thinking of using Resene Double Lemon Grass. What paint system would you recommend? June 2016
Q. Rasch Wallton products 179002 and 341904 say to paint over with a plasticiser resistant latex or acrylic paint. Is Resene Zylone Low Sheen okay to use or should I seal with a vinyl sealer first? A. To the best of my understanding there is no plasticiser resistant latex or acrylic paint. To overcome the issue of plasticiser migration from the paper we recommend applying a coat of Resene Vinyl Wallpaper Sealer before applying a Resene interior wall paint. June 2016
Q. Can I use Resene Super Gloss enamel over Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer/undercoat on a wooden book shelf? A. You can overcoat Resene Quick Dry with both solvent and waterborne topcoat paints. This includes Resene Super Gloss. June 2016

Q. We're renovating and have a potential issue regarding LRV% and council signoff. We had chosen Resene Quarter Ironsand which has an approximate LRV% of 14. We have been told by the builder that the council is cracking down on dark colours and we may not get a CCC if we use this product. What is the LRV% for the same product in CoolColour, and what would Resene Eighth Ironsand be (again, in CoolColours)? Our builder was told the LRV% could need to be as high as 45. A. LRV is only a measure of the reflection of visible light and not heat. Given this there is no difference in LRV between the non-cool and CoolColour™ version of a given colour. What does change is the TSR (total solar reflectance) which is a measure of heat reflected by a colour,. The TSR is always higher for the CoolColour version of a colour. TSR values are measured after application of two coats of tinted topcoat over a white basecoat. The white basecoat will give the maximum TSR value but if not used the CoolColour benefit remains but at a slightly reduced level. There is no linear relationship between LRV and TSR but we can relate the two measurements to use TSR to allow use of some CoolColours where an LRV cut-off is imposed by a cladding supplier. Your reference suggests that the LRV cut-off is set at 45%, the corresponding TSR value then has to be greater than 40%. June 2016

Q. Can I put a waterborne enamel over an old enamel surface? A. Yes but the old solventborne enamel needs to be thoroughly sanded and a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat applied. June 2016
Q. I am creating a home theatre and would like to use the wall as a screen rather than a pull down screen. What paint is recommended for this purpose and which colours are best? A. Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen tinted to Resene Silver Sand has been used for this purpose. June 2016
Q. How do we remove acrylic paint splashes from a maroon Formica benchtop? It looks like the painter has rinsed out his brush and then flicked it over the bench. A. Rubbing with a cloth wet with methylated spirits is the usual way to remove waterborne paint from a hard surface. June 2016
Q. We have a smooth Seratone® walled bathroom. I would like to apply wallpaper to one portion of the wall. Is this possible? A. In my experience it is very difficult to apply wallpaper to a Seratone® type wall lining and achieve adhesion to the surface. June 2016
Q. I have pre-painted concrete pedestrian areas, exterior, approx. 50 sq. metres and the paint is lifting due to rising moisture. How do I fix the problem before repainting? A. This is a common issue. The only way that we have found to give some control is to remove the paint completely and apply a saturation coat of Resene Aquapel then re-apply the paint system. Resene Aquapel is a water repellent treatment. This will give hold back of a certain water pressure but unfortunately its ability to hold water back may be exceeded in some conditions. June 2016
Q. I want to paint my woodwork that I've just recently finished but I would like to use poster colour paints as I don't think I should buy one wood paint just to paint the top of the woodwork and not its whole body. Can I actually use a poster colour paint to paint the woodwork? And if so do I need to add any other mediums before painting? A. You can use Resene testpots if you want a range of colours. The timber must be primed first then two topcoats applied. June 2016
Q. I've purchased a 16 year old house that has textured wallpaper. The wallpaper is not in great condition and has patches where the paper has been damaged and there are also some minor holes in the wall. The wallpaper seams are also visible. I want to paint the walls, but research indicates its best to remove the paper first. However, will the walls require plastering repairs before painting? Would this require a professional plasterer? I'm new to DIY and not sure of the process. A. We would strongly recommend that you employ a professional plasterer for this. June 2016
Q. Do you have a paint suitable to apply to old concrete paths that would both wear well and not be a slip problem if wet? A. We recommend Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path. June 2016
Q. I have bought metallic paint from you in the colour Resene Obelisk and have got someone to spray it for me but the metallic is not showing through. How do I fix this? A. When spraying using an airless spray unit there is a lot more material coming through and in some cases if you apply a heavier coat the metallic flake can sink back into the film. By standing back between 600 - 800mm from the wall, using a FFT414 tip and applying a tack coat to build it up to a light even wet film will help. It is a lot easier to control when using a pressure pot unit as the volume is easier to keep up with (not a gravity gun as you would need to fill it too often and may lose the wet edge as a result). June 2016
Q. We have a Douglas Fir cathedral ceiling in our home and I would like to paint it. Do I have to sand the varnish off first and am I able to use a gap filler in between the boards where there are gaps? A. Clean down the areas to be painted using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label directions. Apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and leave to cure for at least 48 hours with good ventilation. Then apply two coats of a Resene interior waterborne paint finish; most use Resene Ceiling Paint flat. Based on experience and comments from the field I would not recommend trying to fill the gaps between the boards with any filler type. A better result will be obtained if you overlay plasterboard and then paint. July 2016

Q. I have painted some doors in my house with Resene Half Spanish White and then with two coats of Resene Write-On Wall Paint. It's working okay, but once rubbed off, often leaves a black cloud like residue and I think I might not have painted the whiteboard paint on thickly enough. I have one other door to do now and want to put another coat of whiteboard paint onto the doors I have already done, to give them an extra coating. How do I prepare the surface of the doors that already have whiteboard paint on them? A. Wipe down with a cloth and meths to remove all traces of whiteboard eraser residues then wet sand using 220 wet and dry paper. Take care not to sand through to the underlying pigmented coat but just enough to dull off the Resene Write-On Wall Paint clear. Allow to dry and wet wipe to remove dust then re-apply the Resene Write-On Wall Paint clear. July 2016
Q. I have about three litres of Resene Summit Roof left over. Can I use this as the first coat over primed timber decking? I'm going to use a similar colour for the decking and would like to find a way to use up the left over Resene Summit Roof. Alternatively could I use it as a window sill paint? A. In theory yes but in practice I would say no, unless you are planning to use a waterborne coating such as Resene Lumbersider for the final coats. July 2016
Q. Can I use a testpot Resene Nero on undercoated timber footings on the south side of a house? No sun. A. Yes, Resene testpots colours are made with a Resene exterior waterborne paint. July 2016
Q. My son in law has painted his garage floor with two pack floor paint. It is a new unstained concrete floor. 24 hours later the paint has not dried, I believe because the two parts weren't mixed properly. What can he do to repair this? A. Sorry but not an easy fix. Remove as much paint as possible by scraping with a wide flat blade. Then using Resene Thinner No.12 wipe off the remaining uncured paint residue. Use a face mask fitted with an organic cartridge when solvent wiping and maintain ventilation during and after this step of the removal process. July 2016
Q. How long does paint keep? I am away at the moment but want to buy paint to interior decorate while I have tenants. A. Difficult to put an exact time on this but all paint should be stored in a cool well ventilated area and with a tight closed lid. Waterborne paints can undergo bacterial contamination which can render the paint unusable. There is a greater potential for this if the paint cans have been opened and a part can is then stored. Bacterially contaminated paint has an odour reminiscent of unwashed sports socks. July 2016
Q. Is it advisable to paint the top few centimetres of interior walls the same as the ceiling? A. There is no technical reason to do so. If the ceilings are square stopped it is advisable to use the same wall/ceiling colour. July 2016
Q. I bought some Resene Lumbersider and do not like the colour. Can this be tinted to a darker colour and can it be used on an iron roof? A. We can only add limited amounts of colourants to alter the colour. It depends upon what colour you are after. We usually do not recommend Resene Lumbersider for roofs as it is a low gloss product and the onset of chalking will be sooner than a higher gloss dedicated roof paint. July 2016
Q. I am combining and redoing my kitchen and dining rooms so will have a mix of old and new plasterboard surfaces. These will be repair plastered and both ceiling and walls will be skim plastered. I intend using Resene Ceiling Paint flat and Resene Zylone Low Sheen for the walls. Do I have to seal the plastered surfaces? I do have Resene Broadwall Waterborne Wallboard Sealer used previously to seal vinyl wallpaper so can use that if I have to. A. Yes, bare plasterboard and stopping needs to be sealed before topcoating (Resene Broadwall Waterborne Wallboard Sealer or Resene Sureseal). July 2016
Q. I spent all weekend building a shed for storing hay for our horses. Today my wife decided to paint the outside of it. She picked up a tin of what should have been deck stain from my garage and proceeded to paint the walls with used engine oil. (My fault for not getting rid of the tin after giving my ute an oil change). The exterior walls are h3.2 treated plywood. Can this be painted over with anything? And what do I need to do now? A. Definitely not an easy one to solve. To paint or stain the oil will have to be removed from the timber. The only possible way would be to treat with Resene Emulsifiable Solvent Cleaner. But this does involve using a solvent and then washing off with water so ground contamination is unavoidable. July 2016
Q. I need to polyurethane a Karelia wood floor as it has been used in bathrooms and I need to improve the waterproof sealing of the floor. I would like a satin finish. What product and application method would be best? The floor has a current manufacturer lacquer on it at the present. A. We recommend a moisture cured polyurethane for bathroom floors. Resene Polythane is our product but it is only available as a full gloss. July 2016
Q. Painted concrete blocks are showing bubbling and white crystalline deposits under the paint, both inside and outside. I want to repaint. What preparation will prevent a reoccurrence? Should repainting wait till summer, or could I start soon repainting the outside? A. The crystalline deposits are efflorescence which is indicative of water passing through the blockwork and bringing dissolved salts to the surface which crystallises when the water evaporates. You will need to establish where the water is coming from before trying to address this as painting will not fix the issue. July 2016
Q. I moved into a house that I'm renting and I was allowed to paint but I was a single mom and about to have a baby any day. I did notice I had LOTS of dog hair on the walls in the new paint job that the owners had done. I just didn't have time to paint but now that my kids are older I want to paint it. It's obvious they didn't care when they painted it because the hair is in big chunks especially near the base boards and trim. What's my best approach to remove the clumps of paint and fur so I can get started painting? A. Careful scraping using a tungsten blade scraper maybe the easiest way but if the substrate is plasterboard you will have to tread carefully then sand to feather out any obvious edges in the paintwork. Alternatively sand using 100 grit sandpaper. If the paint is a waterborne paint then it may clog the sandpaper. Once you have removed the offending material apply a full coat of Resene Broadwall Surface Prep & Seal then topcoat. July 2016
Q. How soon after sandblasting a steel beam can you apply paint? A. Before the freshly blasted surface dulls off. Here the recommendation is usually within four hours of blast cleaning; however this is humidity dependent. July 2016
Q. I am repainting old windows. Internally the frames are clear finished matai. The sashes are clear finished cedar. All external surfaces are painted. I have sanded the interior surfaces and stripped the exterior surfaces. Interior - where exposed to sun the old clear finish has largely come off. Where protected from direct sunlight the gloss surface has been removed. My question is if I use Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer on these is it also ok on the areas where the old clear finish has been removed? The line between the two areas is vague. On the outside - is Resene Quick Dry ok on the cedar sashes or should I use primer? A. Use Resene Wood Primer, not Resene Quick Dry, for priming bare cedar (interior or exterior). Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer can be used as an adhesion primer over old varnished surfaces but not as a primer on bare timbers. July 2016
Q. I would like to renew a wooden coffee table. The top is faded and dry. A. Thoroughly sand and apply a Resene Colorwood stain colour and finish with three coats of Resene Aquaclear waterborne varnish. July 2016
Q. We have a floor in a cafe that has ceramic floor tiles that are apricot in colour. We want to change the colour of this floor. Is it possible to paint over the tiles? Then apply two coats of Resene Lustacryl. Roll all coats using the recommended roller sleeve. The new paint system will take five days to develop good initial adhesion and continue to cure for an additional 3 weeks until full cure occurs. In the early stages the paint surface will not have good resistance to cleaners or abrasion as these features develop as the film undergoes curing. Note that painting will not reproduce the original features of the tiled surface. The main issue for you will be turnaround time as the time lags between coats for minimum cure may not fit your operation. July 2016
Q. We have just had the outside of our house professionally cleaned. However, they managed to strip most of the white paint off one set of our metal ranch sliders on our sunroom. Is there anything special we should do or use to deal with this and to prevent it happening again? A. Sections can be protected using a sheet of light metal but this will require two people, one to do the water washing the other to hold the protection in place. I am surprised that the paint was so easily removed given the assumption that the house washing should have involved low pressure. White is the most reflective to heat but powder coated exterior surfaces can undergo breakdown not due to colour but as the powder coating deteriorates. July 2016
Q. I need to repaint a particleboard stage floor which needs to be hardwearing and black. The floor is currently painted but will have a light sand. What do you suggest we use to recoat? A. We recommend two coats of Resene Lumbersider Black, leave for 48 hours then mop down with fresh water and allow to dry. Then apply two coats of Resene Uracryl GraffitiShield Flat. July 2016
Q. I need a paint system for 1890s painted sand-stock brick. I have exterior brickwork in need of repointing and painting. Can you please recommend the preferred Resene system and preparation? A. Assuming your brick work is currently coated with an acrylic paint in sound condition, you could recoat with Resene Lumbersider or Resene X-200. Preparation involves a thorough clean of the surface as detailed in the product data sheets. Ideally new pointing should be left for 28 days to cure before painting. Resene LimeLock can be used to reduce down time. July 2016
Q. How do I prepare a rimu ceiling for painting? My house has a cathedral ceiling (tongue and groove). Am guessing it is clear. About a 1980s home. A. Wash using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner following label directions then apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer. Leave to cure for at least 48 hours with ventilation then apply two coats of a Resene waterborne paint in your selected gloss level. July 2016
Q. I am painting some windows which have been stripped back but the stain from the wood is bleeding through the acrylic undercoat. I am wondering if I can put an oil based undercoat over the waterbased undercoat and then a waterbased topcoat over that? If this is possible what product would you suggest for maximum stain blocking? A. If the primer is Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat then yes to an application of a coat of solventborne Resene Enamel Undercoat to block tannin bleed, then you can apply two coats of a Resene waterborne enamel topcoat. July 2016
Q. I want to change the colour of three large dark grey ceramic pots that I have had for years and would like white. Can you let me know what paint is best and also what undercoat I need please? A. Clean the surfaces to be painted with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash following label directions. Allow to dry then apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and leave to cure for 48 hours then apply two coats of Resene Lumbersider (low sheen) or Resene Sonyx 101 (semi-gloss) white. July 2016
Q. I am painting the interior of a new house. The trim is all preprimed. What do you recommend? Do I apply undercoat, then two topcoats or spot prime nail holes etc? A. I would sand the preprimer then reprime using Resene Quick Dry primer undercoat (fill nail holes first) then apply two coats of topcoat. July 2016
Q. I have polyurethaned cork tiles in my kitchen. I am having vinyl laid over them but it cannot be coved. The gap between the bottom of the cupboards and the floor therefore has cork tiles stuck to it. I want to paint these and have heard that Resene have a product that can seal these and then I can just paint. Can you advise please? A. Yes you can use Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer overcoated with two coats of one of our waterborne enamel topcoat paints. July 2016
Q. Can I use enamel timber paint on unexposed metal? A. If the metal is bare it will need a metal primer such as Resene GP Metal Primer, not enamel undercoat. July 2016
Q. I have some older tiles behind the hobs in my kitchen that I want to paint. There is also a smaller square of the same tiles on the bench top, close to the hobs. Is there a heat resistant tile paint/product that I can paint the tiles with? A. The following is what we recommend for painting Formica and glazed tiles: Using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner ensure the surfaces to be painted are clean and free from grease. Pay particular attention to hand contact areas. Apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and allow to cure without water contact for at least 48 hours before overcoating. Then apply two coats of Resene SpaceCote or Resene Lustacryl. The new paint system will take five days to develop good initial adhesion and continue to cure for an additional three weeks until full cure occurs. In the early stages the paint surface will not have good resistance to cleaners or abrasion as these features develop as the film undergoes curing. Note that painting will not reproduce the original features of the laminate/glazed tiles. Painting is for decorative purposes only and we cannot state heat resistance information when the paint system is to be used close to a gas hob. July 2016
Q. Is it longer lasting to paint directly on plasterboard rather than on lining paper? A. If the plasterboard is new then as long as the plasterboard is sealed with a quality sealer coat I see no benefit in lining paper. July 2016
Q. Does the Resene Enamacryl Metallic Bedrock come in high gloss and how much is would it cost? A. There is only the one gloss level for Resene Enamacryl Metallic colours; however you can apply a coat of Resene Aquaclear if you want to alter the gloss level. July 2016
Q. Do you sell stuff to crackle or antique paint? A. Yes we do – it's called Resene Crackle. July 2016
Q. I want to paint our kitchen floor which is currently composed of: A. Sand then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry Primer Undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene Lusta-Glo. July 2016
Q. Can your chalkboard paint be used with non-permanent highlighters or just chalk? A. Traditional chalk only. If you want to use other pens, then we recommend Resene Write-On Wall Paint – which can be used with whiteboard markers. July 2016
Q. How do I get rid of a white powdery look on my paint? We painted about 10 years ago but in the last few years two rooms have developed this white look. I think it's a type of mildew. I have cleaned with white vinegar but it is drying with the same look. Have you got a paint that protects from it? We are using a dehumidifier in the rooms as they are the coldest areas with teenagers that spend a lot of time in there. A. Wipe down with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label directions taking care not to splash the solution onto furnishings. Leave for 24 hours then wipe down with fresh water and a cloth 2-3 times. Apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish with coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen Kitchen & Bathroom. July 2016
Q. Is it possible to paint over melamine kitchen doors? If so does Resene have a paint product that you recommend? A. The following paint system can be used for painting laminates such as Melteca®. Scrub down using a cleaner such as Jif® and remove all residues. Wet Sand with 400 wet and dry sandpaper taking care not to unduly scratch the laminate surface. Rinse clean and allow to dry then apply Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer (this only needs to be a thin coat and will not achieve opacity over the laminate colour). Allow to cure for 48 hours then undercoat with Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl. For best result roll the topcoats using a Resene No.4 roller sleeve. The paint system will take at least five days to develop adhesion and harden, and full cure requires a month. The painted surface will not have the hardness properties of the original laminate. July 2016

Q. We need to refurbish a fascia by painting over existing tired, chalky paint. I believe the existing paint is basically sound, i.e. not peeling. We believe it was a 2-pot spray system. Q. I want to stain then gloss polyurethane a pine stair handrail (internal) to match an oil based polyurethaned kauri floor. What would you recommend? A. Not an easy one to answer as unlike some other timbers where we have developed a stain to match this is not the case for Kauri. I recommend you visit a Resene ColorShop and look at the Resene Colorwood stain samples to see if there is a colour that matches the Kauri timber colour you have. Also be aware that the Kauri has been clear coated and if this was with an oil based varnish then depending upon the age of the clear there may be yellowing that is due to the clear coat and not the underlying timber. Q. I want to refresh doors and window surrounds, skirtings etc. in my home. They have initially been painted in oil based enamel but I want to freshen them to white. Someone told me I will have to use oil based enamel. Someone else told me to ask Resene as they think it could be easier to 'seal' it with a coat of sealer then you can use a water based enamel instead. Could you advise please if the latter is true and if so what is the sealer please? A. You can use a waterborne enamel such as Resene Enamacryl as the new topcoat. Q. We want to repaint the wooden skirtings in our guest room. They're currently white and we'll repaint in white. They're quite old and haven't been painted in a long time. I understand we need to sand them and then apply a primer, before applying the paint. Is that right? What sort of primer/undercoat should we use? And should we use enamel paint? A. Clean down using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner following label directions. Sand down using 180 grit sandpaper, dust off and apply a full coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat. Two coats of a solventborne topcoat can be used but while this will give the hardest cured film a waterborne enamel such as Resene Lustacryl will not yellow over time but will not develop the same hardness. Apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and allow to cure without water contact for at least 48 hours before overcoating. Then apply two coats of Resene Lustacryl. Note that painting will not reproduce the original features of the laminate. August 2016
