Q&A   p. 36

Q. We need to powder coat aluminium to match Resene Double Black White for a curtain rail. What is the best powder coat colour match?

A. Powder coatings can be difficult as they have a very limited range of colours.

Resene can colour match our paints to a powder coat colour if you confirm a powder coat colour.

What we can't do is match a Resene colour in a powder coat because the powder coat colours are limited to a very small range of colours.

Resene decorative paints are available in thousands of colours. Powder coating colour ranges usually have only 100 or so colours.

What we have found customers will tend to do is:

  • Choose a preferred powder coat colour and then Resene can provide a match to that. E.g. if you choose for example Appliance White, we can tint a Resene version of that.
  • Choose a colour lighter than the wall colour, or a colour that matches another part of the project. This is commonly done for window joinery.
  • In some cases, customers will paint over aluminium with a Resene decorative paint to get exactly the colour they want.

Q. I have been using pots of paint but have found that they have started to get thick.

A. Once the air gets into the pot the paint will start to thicken. The more paint you use, and the less paint in the pot, the more prone the paint is to thickening because there is more and more air vs the amount of paint. You could try laying a piece of cling wrap or similar onto the surface of the paint to prevent the contact with the air in the pot. Then put the lid on as normal. This should help to slow down any thickening.

Q. I have used a new can of a colour that I had painted recently, but the new can seems to be different. Can you please advise why?

A. Resene formulations are based on specific master stands.

There are a number of things that could cause a colour to be wrong:

  • Getting it tinted into two different product types. Are the two products the exact same product?
  • A mistint – i.e. the colour has not been tinted correctly. Each colour is made up of different tinters. If too much or too little or a tinter has been added or one has been missed the colour can end up wrong.
  • The wrong colour has been tinted. E.g. one colour has been asked for and another has been tinted.
  • The paint hasn't been stirred fully so the colour isn't mixed in properly.
  • The paint colour has been contaminated – e.g. if the brush is used for another colour, then that colour could be transferred into another colour. Paint can take a few days to fully dry so it's usually best to judge the colour once it has time to dry properly.

Q. I am plastering up cracks and holes in previously unpainted wall (I stripped the wallpaper that was on there off). I then plan on painting it. I believe there is a product I should be painting over the walls before I paint. Can you please tell me what I should be using?

A. If the walls are not in a wet area like a bathroom, then use Resene Broadwall Surface Prep and Seal.

April 2020

Q. We have just had a block wall erected in the garden. We would like to seal it with Resene X-200 but might not get around to painting it for several months. Does the sealer breakdown over time if it isn't primed and painted immediately?

A. If you are going to seal the wall you can apply a coat of Resene Concrete Primer. This can be left for a few months before topcoating but if left longer you will need to wash down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label instructions before topcoating.

April 2020

Q. I need a paint system for a semi-commercial kitchen (In a church hall). We are going over GIB® plasterboard. We need something hard-wearing and washable. The GIB® will be new, stopped to level 4.

A. Apply a seal coat of Resene Sureseal, an undercoat of Resene Enamel Undercoat and two coats of Resene Super Gloss (gloss) or Resene Lusta-Glo (semi-gloss). The higher gloss level is easier to clean.

April 2020

Q. Our gas fireplace, which throws out a reasonable amount of heat (i.e. it is not just for looks) has been painted with the Resene Lumbersider waterborne low sheen exterior/interior paint. I had understood it would be painted in a fire-resistant paint (black) as the fire is hot enough that the bricks in the surround around it are hot – you can touch with your hand but not hold there permanently.

A. I see no issues with the paint film igniting but the Resene Lumbersider will soften at temperatures above 60⁰ so may wrinkle over time.

April 2020

Q. I've gone and left the first coat of Resene Summit Roof sitting for a month. Will it need any special treatment before the second coat goes on?

A. Wash down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label instructions before painting.

April 2020

Q. I'm trying to decide what to use on skirtings and door frame, semi-gloss or satin? I want them to be easy clean but not too shiny.

A. A semi-gloss such as Resene Lustacryl waterborne enamel is the usual finish for these areas.

April 2020

Q. What is the best paint for commercial garage/workshop floors?

A. We recommend Resene Aquapoxy for Flooring.

April 2020

Q. I am doing up a large house. There is significant varnished timber that needs to be tidied up.

A. The existing varnish will be many layers of varnish and these will have darkened over time. Isolated touch ups in this situation cannot reproduce the existing varnish colour. Sand areas to be recoated and then apply a solventborne varnish such as Resene Qristal Polyurethane in a matching gloss to the existing finish. The major colour difference will be if any areas are sanded back to bare timber.

April 2020

Q. We have put up HardieGroove wall lining in our laundry. We have purchased Resene SpaceCote Kitchen & Bathroom Paint. Do we need to do an undercoat or sealer first? Or can we put that paint straight on?

A. Yes, a sealer is required, best sealer for this area Resene Sureseal, followed by an undercoat of Resene Quick Dry before topcoating.

April 2020

Q. Which is the best product to cover cracks in exterior roughcast walls?

A. If the cracks do not compromise the structural integrity of the walls and the crack width is within the product guidelines you can use Resene Brushable Crack Filler.

April 2020

Q. When sanding my ceiling in a 1960s built house small fibres appear – why is this?

A. If this is a textured celling do not continue to sand as the fibres may be asbestos. Suggest that you contact a company in your area that undertakes asbestos testing.

April 2020

Q. I want to paint some old vanished wooden doors – from a house built in the early 1970s. I've started with the first door and stripped as much varnish off as possible, then painted it with a coat of Resene Quick Dry primer. When it dried, it had orange streaks all over the door. I tried Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer on the other side but this also streaked. What should I use instead?

A. The orange streaks are tannin bleed from the timber into the waterborne primer/sealer.

You will need to apply a coat of Resene Wood Primer before topcoating with any waterborne topcoats.

April 2020

Q. We are painting our mid 70s fibrolite house. It was previously painted 12 years ago. We have washed it thoroughly but are wondering how many coats to put on. The original paint is just faded, hence repainting it.

A. Given the age of the cladding there may be asbestos present in the cladding so do not dry sand or water blast the substrate as this will release asbestos fibres into the atmosphere. If the existing paint system is sound then the wash down should achieve a chalk free surface, then apply two topcoats of any Resene exterior waterborne topcoat tinted to your required colour.

At the time your house was previously painted it was common to apply the topcoats direct to the FC without priming. Recoating may stress the original paint system so either stay with a pale colour of apply the Resene CoolColour version of the topcoat colour as this will reduce the stress on the existing paint system. Application of a Resene CoolColour will reflect more heat than the same colour made using non-cool pigmentation and reduce heat related stress on the substrate; it will not make the painted surface cool to touch.

April 2020

Q. Would Resene Lumbersider be suitable for painting the underside of a shade sail in a light colour?

A. It depends upon the shade sail material. If PVC the yes, most other plastics no. You may want to apply some to a small section and see what adhesion is achieved.

April 2020

Q. I purchased Lawson Cypress to put down as decking and wanted to finish my deck with Resene Driftwood stain. I've just done a few boards and they look more like Resene Heartwood than Resene Driftwood. Why is that happening?

A. The full stain colour does not develop until two coats are applied. Stains are semi-transparent and the final colour is determined by the timber colour. Either of these two factors may be the reason the colour seems different.

April 2020

Q. I have painted some exterior walls with Resene Sonyx 101 CoolColour semi-gloss cool colours in Resene Bokara Grey. I'm happy with the colour but would prefer a lower gloss. I was wondering my options, paint over it with a matt clear coat or use another paint over the top?

A. You can overcoat Resene Sonyx 101 with Resene Lumbersider if you want a lower gloss finish.

April 2020

Q. I'm making a whole lot of hardwood trellis with 140 wide boards to go around a deck area. I'm going to prime them with Resene Aluminium Wood Primer. Will I need to give this a sand before putting the topcoat on? What would give me the best finish? I want to paint them black in a semi-gloss finish using Resene Sonyx 101 or Resene Lustacryl.

A. Resene Aluminium Wood Primer is slower drying than Resene Wood Primer so you will have to allow a longer dry time before the primer achieves hard dry. There is usually no need to sand the primer before topcoating. Sanding can also remove primer thickness which may then require a second coat of primer to be applied.

I'd recommend Resene Lumbersider CoolColour Black for the topcoat. Application of a Resene CoolColour will reflect more heat than the same colour made using non-cool pigmentation and reduce heat related stress on the substrate; it will not make the painted surface cool to touch. This will reduce but not eliminate the potential for dimensional changes when painted black.

April 2020

Q. We have a project – new unisex toilet cubicles in a church building. We need an interior wall paint finish over Level 4 plaster/GIB® Aqualine. This needs to be durable, easy commercial clean. Can you recommend a product please?

A. Apply two coats of Resene Broadwall Surface Prep and Seal then finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl Kitchen & Bathroom.

April 2020

Q. Is it ok to use leftover CoolColour roof paint on the roughcast plaster base of our house and porch area?

A. Is it ok to use leftover CoolColour roof paint on the roughcast plaster base of our house and porch area?

April 2020

Q. I have repainted my house, stucco, last painted about 30 years ago. I have redone the windows several times, but the walls were in good condition. The paint isn't peeling, but it has lost its gloss. I'm about to repaint the spouting, most of it is copper. In places Verdigris has started. What treatment do you recommend before repainting?

A. You can remove the verdigris by carefully sanding with 400 grit wet and dry sandpaper or make a paste of equal parts vinegar, flour and salt. Rub it all over the affected area and allow it to sit for about 30 minutes. Once removed and dry, apply a coat of Resene Vinyl Etch then topcoat with an exterior waterborne topcoat.

April 2020

Q. I have painted my front door with a waterbased gloss paint but have patches of different gloss levels. Is this my painting technique? I have tried to stick to long brush strokes in one direction, but still have a slightly patchy finish.

A. When applying a waterborne paint under conditions which lead to a fast loss of water from the wet paint film the film can partially dry and set up. If you back over (lap in) an area where this has happened then the existing film is disturbed and due to the increased solids there is no flow and levelling possible and I think this is the reason.

Suggest that you add Resene Hot Weather Additive to the waterborne paint to reduce the possibility of this happening. Resene Hot Weather Additive extends the open time of the wet paint to give more time for flow and levelling.

April 2020

Q. We have an old 1940s native timber house which we have completely stripped back to bare wood externally. No matter how many layers of primer and topcoat we put on, it keeps flaking off. Which type of primer/paint/treatment do you recommend for old external native timber that has been completely stripped back to bare wood?

A. If the complete paint system is peeling back to bare timber then the issue is more than likely primer selection.

Native timbers such as Totara and Matai must be primed with a waterborne primer such as Resene Quick Dry. All other timbers (Rimu/Kauri) can be primed with Resene Wood Primer. The oil-based primer does not cure/dry when applied to Totara or Matai hence the need for the waterborne priming option.

April 2020

Q. I have a 1960s stucco house which I am about to paint. There are a number of patches where the previous paint job has bubbled or peeled off showing the grey concrete finish. Before putting on the main coat should I use a standard undercoat or a sealer on the bare patches?

A. Spot prime any bare substrate with Resene Sureseal. Overcoat the areas primed with Resene Sureseal with a coat of Resene X-200 then apply at least two further full coats of Resene X-200.

April 2020

Q. What is the best way to remove old textured wallpaper (probably late 80s early 90s) and prepare the wall for painting?

A. A wallpaper steamer is the best, score the paper (to allow the steam to penetrate the paper. There has been in the past a practice to use a PVA based wallpaper adhesive. From experience if this adhesive type has been used it is almost impossible to strip the paper.

April 2020

Q. We have a front porch that is under cover. It does get the midday sun. We have painted the front door with Resene Lustacryl. Can we use same paint on the porch so the floor and door match?

A. Resene Lustacryl can be applied to any prepared and primed substrate including flooring. When used as a flooring finish it will not have wet slip resistance as it is a semi-gloss finish.

April 2020

Q. We are working on a heritage project. In retaining the facade there will be a series of cut ends of reinforcing we need to protect, especially in this coastal environment, before we refinish the existing concrete facade. Can you recommend a suitable, non bituminous sealer for this task, that will fit with subsequent topcoats of Resene waterbased acrylic?

A. Our primer for this would be at least three coats of Resene Armourcote 221 epoxy primer. Use emery paper to roughen up the cut surface as this will significantly improve adhesion.

April 2020

Q. Is your roof paint suitable for cover on malthoid shingles ?

A. Prime the malthoid with a coat of Resene Membrane Primer before topcoating with a waterborne topcoat.

April 2020

Q. Can I paint the front of a glass splashback which is attached to the wall and how do I do that?

A. In principle yes but the reverse of glass splashbacks are usually coated as the glass gives a barrier to heat, abrasion and cleaners.

April 2020

Q. We are painting the exterior of our house, timber weatherboards. There are steel box corners which are slightly rusty. I saw a Resene Rust-Arrest product which we could use first.

A. The metal soakers were probably originally galvanised. You could use a GP Metal Primer after removing loose rust. Resene Rust-Arrest cannot be applied to galvanising.

April 2020

Q. I have a couple of barge boards presumably pine where resin is causing the paint to bubble in patches. After sanding back and applying sealer undercoat then repainting this still happens. What should I apply/do to prevent this again?

A. Prime areas of resin exudation using Resene Aluminium Wood Primer, this will reduce resin bleed but if there is a resin pocket resin bleed may still occur. Dark colours will exacerbate resin bleed. The primer is slower to dry than our other solventborne wood primer so check the film is hard dry before topcoating.

April 2020

Q. Please give me advice how to prepare old varnished veneer wood doors for painting. Some of them have a smooth surface, some are covered by tiny cracks and some have dents as well. I tried to sand the varnish off but it's a really hard job and I couldn't finish even one door.

A. Using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner ensure the surfaces to be painted are clean and free from grease, paying particular attention to hand contact areas.

Thoroughly sand then apply a full coat of Resene Quick Dry and finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl.

April 2020

Q. I would like to paint my garage floor.

A. Resene Aquapoxy for Flooring is the system we recommend for garage floors.

April 2020

Q. I have an old ceramic tile hearth that I'd like to paint over. The hearth has an old yunca flued fire sitting on it. I've given the hearth a coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer but want to check if I can use some Resene Walk-on paving paint over the top.

A. Paining is only possible if you can maintain hand contact on the area to be painted when the fire is at full heat. You can apply Resene Walk-on over Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer. The painted surface will be damaged if hot embers fall on the hearth.

April 2020

Q. I have an extensive patio area of 1 metre square of concrete (bordered ) matching the driveway. Due to a problem when laying the drive 25 years ago they were unable to colour it and instead it was painted with an industrial product. I have had to revisit it every five years but the end result is not what it was and it just looks a dirty grey (it should be black). Do you have a black paint that would be suitable to cover both the patio area and drive?

A. The only possible paint for both areas would be Resene Blacktop, this is a bitumen-based refresher paint for bitumen surfaces.

Concrete will need to be water blasted and then bare concrete primed with Resene Sureseal before applying the Blacktop. Resene Blacktop will turn grey over time as this is the natural outcome of bitumen weathering.

April 2020

Q. I want to paint my concrete driveway, however I'm not sure the best product to use. It looks as though the existing colour is pressed into the concrete. Would I be best to use a stain or paint?

A. Best to stain, Resene Concrete Stain can be used.

April 2020

Q. We have removed wallpaper from and old 60s house and taken off some of the gib paper. I have some of your Decorator High Cover Acrylic wall board sealer. Will this product be ok to use to seal the torn areas of the GIB® first then do another coat for the entire surface before plastering is done?

A. Apply a seal coat of Resene Sureseal Then flush fill areas where the paper has come off using a stopping product such as Gib® Redi Fill, seal filled areas again with Resene Sureseal then apply the Resene Broadwall.

April 2020

Q. I have copper spouting, unpainted, weathered two years. What should I use to prime it?

A. Use Resene Vinyl Etch primer for this application.

April 2020

Q. I believe I have mildew growing on my garage ceiling. It's not bad but is thin yellow white film. The garage is not insulated. It is low single pitch with a small cavity and the door doesn't form a seal.

What paint shall I use to reduce mildew in my garage? And I am wasting my time and should I just fix the installation issue?

A. Mildew growth is usually a sign of poor ventilation along with high air moisture content and low light conditions.

Treat the celling with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label directions, Ensure the area is wiped down with water and a cloth, with water changes. Allow to dry put then apply two coats of Resene Quick Dry primer undercoat. The Resene Quick Dry has a package that will inhibit future bio growth but existing growth must be killed first with the Resene Moss & Mould Killer treatment.

April 2020

Q. We want to paint the edge of a concrete step so it stands out in the daytime and glows in the dark. Will the Glow in the Dark paint adhere to concrete please?

A. The glow in the dark time of Resene FX Nightlight is up to 4 hours so will not give a prolonged overnight effect. It will glow once the light goes at night so would be good for the first few hours after dark.

The FX Nightlight cannot be applied direct to concrete, for bare exterior concrete apply a sealer coat of Resene Sureseal followed by two coats of Resene Lumbersider and then finish with a coat of Resene Clearcoat UVS.

April 2020

Q. We were advised to use Uracryl for the kitchen bench top. Colour is great and it seems tough. My question is there any tips to ensure a smooth final coat and also do we need a clear sealer to finish it? Just wondering if it is ok with food prep etc?

A. We recommend two coats of the pigmented topcoat – you can apply an additional coat of the clear of the same gloss level as this does give protection to the pigmented base.

While the Resene Uracryl paint system does have a degree of heat resistance it will be damaged if hot pans are placed direct on the surface or if the surface is used for cutting.

April 2020

Q. I'm in the process of painting the outside of my timber windows. I tried to sand it down but it ends up that the layer gets tacky and blocks the sanding paper. With the heat gun it's almost impossible to remove the paint. How can I prepare the surface for a new coat?

A. Are you saying that when you sand the paint is goes soft and forms small balls of paint rather than dusting off? If so then the existing paint is probably as conventional waterborne coating. Heat is created due to friction when the paint is sanded and this can soften certain paint types. A heat gun and a tungsten scraper may be a better option than sanding to remove that existing paint.

April 2020

Q. Would you please be able to advise on the best way to clean an external wall. It's had plants alongside it and the spores over time have discoloured the wall. It only appears on some of the wall but not all. I've cleaned a small patch by hand with just water and a brush but is there is a quicker way to clean that you could please suggest?

A. Treat the areas with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label instructions – this should deal to the spores.

April 2020

Q. I have a coloured cork bathroom floor, in good condition. I would like to repaint it. Can you please tell me which products I need to do this?

A. Thoroughly sand the existing clear floor to degloss and profile for recoating. Dust off and apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry and finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl Kitchen & Bathroom or Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen Kitchen & Bathroom. Neither finish will give wet slip resistance but I assume that this would also have been the case with the existing varnished tiles.

April 2020

Q. What Resene paint would be suitable for a Butynol roof and if needed what primer or undercoats would be needed? The roof is 4 years old and I am wishing to paint it to protect it and therefore increase its life span.

A. Wash down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label directions then apply a coat of Resene Membrane Primer followed by two coats of Resene Lumbersider colour. The paint system is purely decorative and will not change the water tightness of the butynol roofing.

April 2020

Q. I want to paint the interior plywood walls and ceiling of my small office cabin. Some of the panels have knots and staining from a water leak that I wish to cover up. Also, it looks like the plywood has had some sort of clear sealer applied. I would like to know what I should use as a primer and topcoat.

A. Apply a coat of Resene Sureseal then finish with two coats of Resene topcoat.

April 2020

Q. We are installing Titan Board cladding behind a metal rainscreen cladding (concealed) and a Fixed Aluminium Louvre (more open). Maintenance of JH cladding says paint every 7-10 years. What is the best option for proof paint that will last in a cavity situation without needing to be repainted too often?

A. Apply a saturation coat of Resene Solventborne Aquapel to all faces and allow to cure for at least 48 hours then apply an envelope coat of Resene Concrete Primer and finish the exposed face with three coats of Resene X-200.

Cannot give an accurate time frame on recoating but if this system was fully exposed to weathering a recoat would be needed around year 10 to maintain aesthetics.

April 2020

Q. Is the Resene Uracryl paint system suitable for a wall in an indoor pool environment (not in the pool itself). Secondly do you have a paint system for the same indoor pool setting that can go over structural zinc plates as protection?

A. A Resene Uracryl paint system can be applied to an appropriately prepared substrate. For the galvanised substrate apply 2-3 coats of Resene Armourcote 221 then apply two coats of Resene Uracryl topcoat. Sand areas of glossy galvanising to degloss before primer application.

April 2020

Q. In the kitchen there is a sheet of bare hardboard which I have sealed but I don't have any undercoat. Can I just use the top straight onto the sealer?

A. Bare oil tempered hard board must be primed with Resene Sureseal before topcoating.

April 2020

Q. I have some wooden cross back chairs. I'm pretty sure they are stained. I wanted to do spot fixing rather than having to redo the whole chair. What would you recommend?

A. Touch up will be difficult to do to get a seamless colour and gloss match. The chairs are more than likely to have originally been stained then over coated with a clear polyurethane topcoat all spray applied in a factory.

Only suggestion is to see if any of our Resene Colorwood stains match the existing stain colour, lightly sand the damaged areas then apply the stain and overcoat with a Resene Qristal Polyurethane varnish of a matching gloss level to the existing clear. It may be best to try one chair to see if you can achieve what you are seeking.

April 2020

Q. I am building a 12m catamaran and considering using Resene Uracryl 402 urethane acrylic for the interior finish. What do you recommend?

A. Apply a prime coat of Resene Armourcote 221 to the sanded epoxy base system then apply the two coats of Resene Uracryl.

April 2020

Q. We are looking for some black paint to finish painting the exterior painted concrete blocks of our cowshed.

A. Wash down with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label instructions. Assuming the existing paint system is sound apply two coats of Resene X-200. If there are areas where paint has lifted/blistered then prepare these areas back to a sound edge and spot prime with Resene Sureseal. Stripe coat areas primed with Resene Sureseal with a coat of Resene X-200 then finish with two full coats of Resene X-200.

April 2020

Q. I have Butynol covered roof dormers and want to paint them – can you recommend a type of paint that is suit?

A. Scrub down the butynol using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash then apply a coat of Resene Membrane Primer and finish with two coats of Resene Lumbersider or Resene Sonyx 101. Use the CoolColour version if using a darker colour. Application of a Resene CoolColour will reflect more heat than the same colour made using non-cool pigmentation and reduce heat related stress on the substrate; it will not make the painted surface cool to touch.

April 2020

Q. I have painted outside furniture with Resene Galvo One. Can I use Resene Sonyx 101 waterborne semi-gloss successfully for the finish coat or do I need a different type of paint?

A. Yes you can topcoat Resene Galvo One with Resene Sonyx 101, but Resene Lustacryl would be a better topcoat option as it is harder.

April 2020

Q. Can I paint over waterbased paint on window ledges with oil base paint?

A. I would not recommend applying a solventborne enamel over a waterborne paint. The waterborne paint is softer than the enamel and may wrinkle after a time.

April 2020

Q. Can you please recommend a primer and paint system for painting a plywood dinghy?

A. Apply two coats of Resene Armourcote 221 and finish with two coats of Resene Uracryl 403.

April 2020

Q. We have four varnished doors in our apartment that we would like to paint white.

A. Using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner ensure the surfaces to be painted are clean and free from grease, paying particular attention to hand contact areas.

Then there are two painting options, first is to sand to degloss the varnish (do not need to remove the varnish back to bare timber) then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry Primer Undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl.

The second option after cleaning; Apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and allow to cure without water contact for at least 48 hours before over coating. The sealer is not designed to be applied as a thick wet film thickness or give opacity, the thinner the coat the better. Then apply two coats of Resene Lustacryl.

The new paint system will take five days to develop good initial adhesion and continue to cure for an additional three weeks until full cure occurs. In the early stages the paint surface will not have good resistance to cleaners or abrasion as these features develop as the film undergoes curing.

Although it is more work my preference would be for the first approach.

April 2020

Q. I have lichen on exterior paintwork. What's the best way to remove and kill it?

A. Two options treat with Resene Moss & Mould Killer or Resene Deep Clean. The latter is a slow acting treatment. Lichen takes time to die and then detach.

April 2020

Q. I want to paint a Marley downpipe, do I need any special primer/undercoat or type of paint?

A. All Resene exterior waterborne paints can be applied directly to clean PVC, full adhesion takes a week to develop.

April 2020

Q. I am looking at purchasing a house. However, the exterior of the building is brick. I would like to paint it.

A. Apply a coat of Resene Concrete Primer and finish with two coats of Resene Lumbersider or Resene Sonyx 101.

April 2020

Q. What is the process for painting over putty around a window? My paint does not last very long and flakes off. The putty is not new. I have applied a waterbased wood primer.

A. Once the putty has developed a skin apply Resene Enamel Undercoat extending the undercoat in a line above the putty onto the glass. A waterborne primer cannot be used for priming new putty.

April 2020

Q. I have a Rimu interior door which is very expensive so I want to get the varnish right. It is a Renall door and their instructions differ to the ones in the Resene recommended paint systems.

Renall says: Seal all surfaces with the first priming or sealing coat. Do not use a water based (acrylic) primer. When clear finishing a 3-4 coat system should be used.

A. The Renall pigmented primer recommendation can be met using Resene Wood Primer, you can then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry as the undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl. For clear coating use Resene Qristal Clear Polyurethane instead of the paint.

April 2020

Q. What do I need to do to paint over varnish?

A. Using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner ensure the surfaces to be painted are clean and free from grease, pay particular attention to hand contact areas.

Then there are two options, sand to degloss then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry primer undercoat or apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and allow to cure without water contact for at least 48 hours before overcoating. The sealer is not designed to be applied as a thick wet film thickness or give opacity, the thinner the coat the better.

Then apply two coats of a Resene waterborne enamel topcoat in your required colour and gloss level.

Q. I have two wardrobe doors which are Veneer (1960) and I want to paint them. I have a DIY sander to use. My question is do I need to sand before I use an undercoat and topcoat? Also, what undercoat would I use? I have some Resene paint to use for the topcoat.

A. Using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner ensure the surfaces to be painted are clean and free from grease, paying particular attention to hand contact areas. Carefully sand so not to cut through the veneer. Then apply a full coat of Resene Quick Dry before top coating.

Q. Can you paint Resene Lustacryl or Resene Sonyx 101 over Resene Uracryl 402?

A. Yes but the Resene Uracryl will need to be cleaned down and sanded then a full coat of Resene Quick Dry applied before topcoat application.
